Kearney boys dominate, girls second in track opener [ 3/14/2008 ]

KEARNEY — The Kearney High boys won nine of 15 events to run away with the team title at the University of Nebraska at Kearney High School Indoor Invitational Friday at Cushing Coliseum.

The Bearcats amassed 189 points compared to runner-up Bellevue West’s 53. Papillion-LaVista won the girls side with 131 points, while Kearney came in second with 95 points.

Matt Trampe was the only Kearney to win two individual titles. Trampe won the mile with a time of 4:46.77 and the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:01.85.

Trampe won the 3,200 race by almost 27 seconds over teammate David Prater, who came in second with a time of 10:28.17. Kearney’s Travis Walker was third (10:32.66).

Other Kearney individual winners included Josh Mead (200-meter dash), Ben Slawski (800), Nate Polacek (pole vault), Vinny Molina (long jump), Jack Chatelain (triple jump) and Drew Nelson (discus). Kearney’s 3,200-meter relay team also placed first.

On the girls side, Maggie Maher was the only Bearcat to win gold. She won the pole vault with a vault of 9 feet, 9 inches. Kearney’s Anna Greenwald was second (9-6) and Abbey Radtke was third (9-0).

Jenna Epley and Taylor Cody were the only Bearcats who came in second. Epley’s toss of 106 feet, 2 inches was 4 feet, 3 inches behind North Platte’s Katie Berglund in the discus, while Taylor Cody’s time of 6:02.61 seconds in the mile was almost three seconds behind champion Jena Schwalenberg of Columbus. Schwalenberg also won the 3,200-meter race.
