KEARNEY — A new season, the same old results for the Kearney High boys track team.

One-two-three finishes in the shot put, discus and 800-meter run helped the Bearcats win their 117th straight invitational championship Saturday at the University of Nebraska at Kearney High School Indoor Invitational. Kearney scored 138 points to runner-up Lincoln North Star’s 89.

“Going 1-2-3 in three different events makes it very difficult on other teams — very difficult,” KHS coach Roger Mathiesen said.

Three other gold medal performances didn’t hurt.

Dillon Snider, the defending state champion in the discus, threw farther than his state-winning effort of last year, winning Saturday’s competition with a throw of 162 feet, 2 inches. Alex Johnson was second with Rich Winter third.

In the shot put, Zach Maloley took first place with a 53-6 mark, while Johnson was second and Snider third.

Keathen Fertig led the 800 sweep with Mike Currin second and Chase Svoboda third. Fertig and Svoboda also ran on the Bearcats’ winning 4x400 relay along with Jacob Olson and Sean Cherry.

Olson won the mile run, one of the premier events, beating state cross country champion Brady McGuire of North Platte by nearly six seconds.

Kearney’s other gold medalist was Paul Bolin, who cleared 14 feet in the pole vault.
