KHS boys dash off to quick start [ 03/23/2009 ]

Jack Chatelain won two individual gold medals and a silver medal, setting a Kearney High indoor record along the way, as the Bearcats cruised to an easy victory Saturday at the University of Nebraska at Kearney High School Invitational at Cushing, Coliseum.
The Bearcats won seven events and tallied 167 points to runner-up Papillion-LaVista’s 81 points. Grand Island was a distant third with 47 points.
Chatelain won the long jump, setting a Kearney High indoor record with a mark of 22 feet, 10 ½ inches. He also won the 55-meter high hurdles (7.72 seconds) and placed second in the triple jump (44-11 ¼).
Josh Mead was another double winner for Kearney, winning the 55-meter dash (6.62) and the 200 (23.64). In the 55 and the long jump, Vinnie Molina took second.
Kearney also went 1-2 in the high jump with Tyler Shields clearing 6-2 for first place, while Zach Jameson was second at 6-0.
Other event winners for the Bearcats were Alex Johnson in the 800 (2:06.40) and David Prater in the 3,200 (10:07.04). Prater also finished second in the mile.
