Kearney boys start to define roles while winning indoor meet [ 03/28/2009 ]

KEARNEY — The Kearney High boys track team keeps sailing along. Winning 12 of the 19 events, the Bearcats dominated Friday’s Kearney High Indoor Invitational at Cushing Coliseum. The non-scoring meet included Grand Island, Gothenburg and Omaha South.
“Right now, we’re happy with where we’re at,” Kearney High coach Roger Mathiesen said. “I would say we’re a little better than I thought we would be at this stage. Obviously we’ve still got a ways to go in a lot of places.”
The meet gives Kearney’s athletes an opportunity to improve their marks, while giving the coaches a chance to evaluate their skills. In some cases, kids were moved to different events to see how they would do.
“Right now, things are setting up pretty well,” Mathiesen said. “It looks like we’re starting to figure out who are relay people are, early. And it looks like we’re going to be able to put pretty competitive kids in every event, which will make us pretty tough to beat in an invite.”
Jack Chatelain won three events for the Bearcats — the triple jump, the 55-meter high hurdles and the 55-meter intermediate hurdles — but he was the only multiple winner of the night.
Other winners for Kearney High were Josh Mead in the 400, Brandt Humphrey in the 800, David Prater in the 1,600, Tyler Shields in the high jump, Vince Molina in the long jump, Josh Redman in the shot put and Dillon Snider in the discus. Kearney also won two of the three relays.
Chatelain’s 7.71-second time in the high hurdles and a 45-foot, 9-inch triple jump were among the top marks, as was Prater’s 4:42 time in the 1,600 shortly after he had finished second in the 800. Mead also turned in a solid time in the 400 (53.08) after he was upset in the 55-meter dash by Gothenburg’s Tannor Mroczek.
Another bright spot for the Bearcats was in the throws where Alex Johnson finished second in both. “Redman and Alex Johnson both had their personal bests in the shot, and the discus was really good news. Dillon Snider threw 160 in the discus and Alex Johnson threw 159,” Mathiesen said. “The kids that got first and second in the shot and discus, and Chatelain, those jump right out at you.”
Kearney’s next meet is April 4 at Columbus where the Bearcats will face off with Millard West and Fremont, the two teams with the best chance to challenge Kearney this year.
