Bearcat boys keep winning streak alive [04/01/2010]

COLUMBUS — The Kearney High boys track team kept its winning streak alive Thursday, doing it in an old-fashioned way.

Scoring in 16 of the 17 events — the 400 traditionally without emphasis by coach Roger Mathiesen — the Bearcats scored 160 points at the Columbus Invitational, beating Millard West by 31 points. Fremont took third place with 81 points in a meeting of three of the top teams in Class A.

But Kearney High had some tricks up its sleeve while stretching its winning streak to 118 meets over 18 years — such as a gold medal in the 200-meter dash.

The Bearcats have been looking for a sprinter this year and may have found one in Steven Stumbough, who won the 200 and took third in the 100.

Other gold medals for KHS came in the 3,200, the 4x800 relay and the high jump.

Jacob Olson won the 3,200 and was a very close second in the 1,600.

Tyler Shields led a 1-2-3 Kearney finish in the high jump.

And Kearney placed three in the top six in the 800, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, the pole vault and the shot put.

Kearney will be back in action April 9 when it plays host to the Kearney High Invitational.
