OMAHA — Kearney High’s Nate Polacek cleared 16 feet in the pole vault
Monday, leading a Kearney High sweep in the event that was the best performance
by one team in state history.
The 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault, along with a sweep of the top three
spots in the long jump, led the Bearcats to their 20th straight win at
the Omaha Central/Dick Jones Invitational and their 107th consecutive
invitational title. Kearney scored 196 points to runner-up Millard West’s
108 points.
Polacek’s vault is the fourth-best in state history. When combined with
the second-place effort of Brett Maher, who went 15-6, and the third-place
mark of Caleb Brandt, who cleared 14-0, the Bearcats posted a new single-meet
best by one team with a total of 45-6.
Maher also won the long jump with Vince Molina second and Jared Archer
third. Maher’s winning mark was 22-4.
Other winners for the Bearcats included Brandt Humphrey in the 800-meter
run (2 minutes, 2.08 seconds), Matt Trampe in the 1,600 (4:28.90), Jack
Chatelain in the triple jump (44-8) and Alex Johnson in the discus (150-4).
The Kearney quartet of Molina, Rustin Dring, Mike Weaver and Josh Mead
won the 4x100 relay in a time of 43.31.
