Kearney boys, girls notch sweep at Dick Jones Invite [04/18/2009]

OMAHA — Kearney’s boys had an easier time than coach Roger Mathiesen anticipated at Friday’s Dick Jones Invitational in joining the Bearcat girls in sweeping the team titles at the 26th annual track and field meet at Burke Stadium.

Facing 2008 state runner-up Millard West for the second time this week, the Bearcat boys won eight of the 17 events on an ideal spring evening for a commanding 186-117 cushion over Millard West. It was the 113th consecutive invitational title for Kearney, a streak that started 16 years ago.

“This is as good of a performance that we’ve had as a team, across the board, for a long time,” Mathiesen said. “What surprised me the most is that we had a track meet in very unkind conditions a week ago Thursday, then had to run Monday at Columbus. This is three very big meets in nine days. In college, you don’t do that.”

David Prater was a double winner for the Bearcats in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, with Brandt Humphrey winning the 800. The Bearcats won the 400 relay when host school Omaha Central was disqualified for a lane violation. Kearney also won the 3,200 relay, using junior varsity runners who posted a winning time of 8:16.18.

In field events, Kearney’s winners were Dillon Snider in the discus at 159-9 and Jack Chatelain in the triple jump at 45-7½. Brandi Winchester ran a season-best 46.75 in the 300 hurdles and Maggie Maher cleared 11-0 in the pole vault to lead Kearney’s girls to a 111-87 advantage over runner-up Columbus. Maher and Winchester also ran laps on the winning 1,600 relay.

“We talked to the kids this week about how hard we’ve worked to this point and now we’re in the middle in the season and have a ways to go, but we like where we are right now,” KHS girls coach Pat McFadden said. “Last week, we went against Lincoln Southwest, which has tremendous individuals, and we had horrible conditions. So two weeks in a row, we’ve had great competition.”

Courtney Coslor’s 17-foot long jump was her personal best, McFadden said, and she also was second in the triple jump at 36-7. Katie Smith had a PR of 5-4 to take second in the high jump and Mackie Keller had her best shot put of 38-1.

Omaha Central sophomore LaQue Moen-Davis, who wasn’t born when Kearney’s boys last lost an invitational, moved into second on the all-time chart for the 100 high hurdles at 14.15, behind the 13.9 of Kearney’s Ashley Brown in 2004, and her triple jump of 40 feet advanced her to third on that all-time listing.
